What data sources do you use?

CDL uses geoLOGIC's geoSCOUT for its mapping software. GeoLOGIC's data (well header, production, land, pressure, fluids) are used in our articles and summaries. Well completions data are from geoLOGIC's Well Completions & Frac Database. Play definitions and play assignments are done in-house.

How long does it take to create content?

A short (~500 words) article takes about three days to research and write and a further two days to draft, layout and proofread.

A long article (3,000–5,000 words) can take about four weeks to research and write, draft, layout and proofread.

The Resource Play Overviews take three to four weeks to research and write, draft, layout and proofread.

How do you decide what to write about?

The Digest technical staff meets biweekly to choose articles. We review licences and spuds, new production and upcoming land sales in the WCSB, as well as interesting news or topics that we've seen in our work. We follow the DOB and BOE Report, attend conferences and talks, network with peers and read professional journals.

Who writes the articles? How many people?

The Digest staff includes several experienced geologists, an engineer, two graphics designers, a cartographer and occasional guest writers.

What kind of coverage can I expect?

Digest articles cover the entire WCSB and the stratigraphic range from the Cambrian to the Quaternary. The most active plays are covered more often (Montney, Spirit River, Viking, Cardium, Duvernay, Bakken).

How often are articles published?

One or two articles are delivered online weekly as pdfs. A hard copy boardroom map is delivered twice a year (April and October).

Clients have access to the Discovery Digest online archives of over 1,600 articles that are available for download.

How much content is there?

Approximately 90 articles are published in a year. As well, clients have access to the Digest searchable online archives of over 1,600 articles.

In a month cycle, subscribers can anticipate:

  • One feature length article (3,000–5,000 words)
  • One quarterly exploration and production analysis (production, completions or land sales)
  • One monthly spud analysis
  • Several shorter topical articles, which could be any combination of land sale alerts, focused production or activity reviews, EURs, significant wells, completions, etc

Are shapefiles included in your maps?

No. CDL is restricted with respect to delivering other vendors' data.

What kind of new content is offered?

Digest articles focus on activity in the WCSB with emphasis on geology, and completions and engineering and fall into two categories: freeform analysis of current activity, production, completion trends or other topics of interest and templated analyses of previous activity.

Can I use the graphics in presentations?

Yes! Graphics have been prepared by a team of graphic designers who are aware that the graphics may be used in presentations by our clients. All graphics in the Digest are high-resolution, often vector and easy to incorporate into any presentation. We ask that you properly reference Canadian Discovery Ltd. below the graphic and in the text.
